Celebrating Identity - Japanese Children's Day

Our school Inquiry this year is Identity. This includes our personal identity, our identity as a school and our identity within the wider Pukerua Bay Community. On Thursday Ellie, Cassandra and their mums Kyoko and Tomoyo shared something that is special to their identity and Japanese culture. Here is what we learnt (as explained to Mrs A by Stella)...

Today in Rua we have been making some Koi-nobori. These are special flags that people in Japan put up on Children’s Day.

Children’s Day is special celebration on May 5th for children. People in Japan wear special clothing on Children’s Day.

On Children’s Day you don’t have to go to school in Japan. Children’s Day used to be just Boys’ Day, but now it’s for all children. But there is a special Girl’s Day on the 2nd March.

The flags we made are a tradition in Japan. The big fish is the father who is usually black. The small fish is the children, it is normally blue. The kite with the streamers has special colours like red is fire, green is grass, orange is the sun, blue is the sea and yellow is gold.

If you have something special you would like to share with our class please contact me. It might be about your culture, things your family is passionate about that are important to your identity, or special knowledge about Pukerua Bay.

BOOKS BOOKS BOOKS
If you have any reading books at home, could you please send these back to school We will be sending home new readers this week and we need the old ones for other groups and classes.
